Upper GI Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure performed by gastroenterologist to find out the disease and conditions related to digestive system like abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, gastritis, ulcers, and bleeding in digestive tract. An endoscopy or a gastroscopy is an examination that allows us to look directly at the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract; the oesophagus (tube that food passes down to reach the stomach); the stomach and around the first bend of the small intestine (duodenum).
Process of endoscopy
A thin flexible tube called a gastroscope or endoscope, which has a light at one end, is used. It is passed through the mouth, down the oesophagus and into the stomach by a specially trained doctor. The tube is thinner than your little finger. It will not get in the way of your breathing at any time, as it passes down your oesophagus and not your windpipe. Sometimes biopsies (small tissue samples) are taken and sent for analysis. The biopsies taken are about the size of a match head and will not cause you any pain. You may feel a slight pull sensation.

Preparation for endoscopy
To make sure the endoscopist performing the endoscopy has a clear view, your stomach must be completely empty. Therefore, you must not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before the endoscopy test. Please omit diabetic medication on the night and on the morning before the procedure. You can take your blood pressure and thyroid medication with small amount of water at 6 am.
When you arrive in the hospital, please inform the hospital staff if:
You are a diabetic or have high blood pressure
If have had any reactions or allergies.
If you are taking any medicines that thin your blood or anticoagulants
If you have Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV.
Will I require anesthesia?
You can choose to have this procedure done either with a local anesthetic spray to numb your throat, or under sedation. The advantages of having the throat spray are:
You can go home immediately after the test and do not need a relative or friend to take you home.
You will be able to drive yourself home and can return to work after the test.
If you choose to have sedation, you must arrange for a relative or friend to take you home. You will not be able to drive or operate any machinery for the remainder of the day and will need to rest quietly at home.
What happens after endoscopy?
After the procedure, you will be taken to the recovery area. If you have had sedation, you will need to rest quietly until the sedative has worn off (usually a couple of hours). The nurse will check your blood pressure and pulse and offer you some tea and biscuits. If you have not had sedation, you will be taken to the discharge area where you will be given a copy of the test results, and you will be able to leave the hospital straight afterwards. However, you will not be able to eat or drink anything until your swallow reflex returns, which usually takes about 30 minutes.
How much does an endoscopy cost in Raipur?
The average cost of an endoscopy test in India is approximately Rs. 2500/-. However, the cost may vary depending upon the different hospitals. However, cost of Endoscopy test depends upon the multiple factors such as procedure done with sedation or without sedation.
